To Wilmington Ohio City Council, We, the undersigned residents and businesses in and around Wilmington Ohio, express our deep concerns about the current homelessness in our community. We believe there is a significant disconnect between the intentions of homeless advocates and the resulting implications for residents, historical landmarks, and the overall quality of life in Wilmington. While we recognize the fundamental human rights of every individual, including the homeless, to receive food and shelter, we are troubled by the stance of some advocates who insist that these services should be extended unconditionally, regardless of residency, background, criminal record, or mental health or addiction issues. This approach has inadvertently positioned Wilmington as a regional hub for homelessness, without addressing the broader implications for our community. There is an unequivocal increase in crime over the past 10 years , as reported by the Wilmington Police Department to the FBI that we believe coincides with the influx of homeless. Despite this, advocates have dismissed these reports as exaggerated or inaccurate and have not taken responsibility for the actions of their clients within the community. This refusal to acknowledge valid concerns undermines the safety and well-being of our residents. Moreover, the narrative that opposition to this approach stems from a minority or is somehow ungodly is both divisive and misleading. Many in our community who hold deep spiritual convictions are among those calling for a change. To insinuate that disagreement with the advocates’ methods equates to a lack of compassion or godlessness is unfair and dismissive of the genuine concerns held by many. We assert that true collaboration requires open dialogue and consideration of diverse perspectives. It is not acceptable for the advocates to monopolize the conversation on homelessness, dismissing all viewpoints that do not align with their own. Wilmington prides itself on its historical significance, community spaces, and safe environment for our children and families. The presence of a local homeless shelter should not detract from these values, nor should it encourage the city to become a sanctuary for individuals who may not have a vested interest in the betterment of our community. It is also crucial to acknowledge the financial and religious dynamics at play within the organizations addressing homelessness. Transparency and accountability are essential in ensuring that these organizations operate with the community’s best interests at heart. Therefore, we petition for the following actions: 1. A thorough and transparent review of the current homelessness policies, with an emphasis on balancing compassion with responsibility to the residents and the community as a whole. 2. The implementation of measures that prioritize the safety and quality of life for all Wilmington residents, including constructive support and rehabilitation options for the homeless. 3. A commitment to genuine collaboration that respects and considers a variety of perspectives and solutions to address the complex issue of homelessness. 4. Ensuring that assistance programs include criteria that encourage responsible behavior and community integration among the homeless population. Our goal is not to alienate or diminish the homeless but to foster a community that upholds the safety, beauty, and historical value of Wilmington for everyone. We urge all stakeholders to come together in finding a balanced solution that serves the best interests of the entire community. Thank you.
